All Air Conditioners need to dump the hot moist air that they extract from the room that you are cooling somewhere and the best place is outside. The LG 8,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner and Dehumidifier Function with LCD Remote, Model # LP0817WSR uses the exhaust vent hose to vent that moist hot air to the outside through your window. Without the exhaust vent hose attached, that moist hot air would just be recycled back into your room, but it would also cause the unit to malfunction. ^CP

Do you have to use a hose that goes out the window or is there an option to that?

The LP0817WSR does not include a drip pan. ^CP

So far, this has worked really well to cool the upstairs room.  My son says it's a little noisy for sleeping. 
 It cools the room quickly, so when no one is in the room, we can save energy by not running it, knowing it will work fast to get it comfortable when needed.
